In recent days, we had an important guest at the weekly meetings of Studio Alliance<\/a><\/strong>, which brings together experts in workplace design and transformation from 18 different European countries: Raphael Gielgen, Future of Work expert at Vitra Raphael Gielgen<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Raphael has been working for many years on future ways of working, behavioural design, the transformation of offices and the relationship between people and space. He also divides his time between a farm in Bavaria and projects in various cities around the world; these two contrasting experiences give him a very powerful perspective on his work.<\/em><\/p>\n

Why Must We Talk About the Future?<\/h3>\n

To be successful today, it is essential to understand the near future.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Change is no longer linear;
technology, behaviours, business models, expectations and economic conditions are all transforming simultaneously and at a rapid pace, from different angles.<\/p>\n

Therefore, our work is not just about designing an office, completing a project or solving a specific problem. It's about anticipating the future and preparing our clients for it by designing spaces that reflect this reality.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

1. \u201cThere is no finish line\u201d<\/h2>\n

Handing over an office or completing a project does not mark the end of the road.

\nBecause:<\/p>\n

  • Technology is changing.<\/li>\n
  • The workforce is changing.<\/li>\n
  • Expectations are changing,<\/li>\n
  • The economic and social landscape is changing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Venues must now adapt to this change; it is no longer a choice.
    This is precisely why designs created without consideration for the future run the risk of becoming obsolete very quickly.<\/p>\n

    2. The Forces Shaping the Next Five Years<\/h2>\n

    \nThe shared data suggests that there are five major forces that will shape the world of work in the near future.<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Artificial intelligence and automation<\/li>\n
    • Energy and sustainability transformation<\/li>\n
    • Demographic changes<\/li>\n
    • Geopolitical uncertainty<\/li>\n
    • New and hybrid working models<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      This table clearly demonstrates that workspaces are not just a visual issue, but a strategic one too.<\/p>\n

      3. The Age of AI and the Agentic Office<\/h2>\n

      One of the most striking aspects of the presentation was the way in which artificial intelligence is reshaping the workforce.

      • Digital workers (AI agents),<\/li>\n
      • Autonomous robotics
        will exist in the same ecosystem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        4. The Abstraction of the Economy and the New Role of the Office<\/h2>\n

        The investment profiles of companies have now largely shifted towards intangible assets.

        \nThis situation does not diminish the value of physical spaces. In fact, it elevates their role to a more meaningful one.
        \nThe office is a space that fosters culture, enables collaboration and conveys a message.
        \nThe function of the space has changed. We are designing meaning, not work desks.

        5. Social Learning: The True Value of the Office<\/h2>\n

        One of the most important concepts discussed was \u2018social learning\u2019.
        \nThe reason people come to the office now is:<\/p>\n

        • communicate more quickly,<\/li>\n
        • share ideas,<\/li>\n
        • have spontaneous encounters,<\/li>\n
        • create together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          These interactions will take place in spaces that will become the most valuable work environments of the future.

          6. The \u2018What If?\u2019 Approach: Designing for the Future<\/h2>\n

          At the end of the presentation, Raphael explained the \u201cWhat if?\u201d questions used to relate design processes to the future:<\/p>\n

          • What if our team structure changes completely?<\/li>\n
          • What if our operations were to become digital?<\/li>\n
          • What if sustainability criteria become much stricter than they are today?<\/li>\n
          • What if half of our workforce switches to remote working?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            \nThese questions encourage us to consider the future impact of the decisions we make today.
            This approach is also very valuable to us.<\/p>\n
